The Wellington Botanic Gardens are set within 25 hectares on a hillside near central Wellington. The gardens are a very popular tourist attraction and are rated as a Garden of National Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and is an Historic Places Trust Heritage Area. The gardens are open from dawn to dusk, and one of the most popular entrances is via the cable car from Cable Car Lane, off Lambton Quay.
Once in the park visitors can wander through floral display gardens, plant collections and wooded areas. There's also a children's playground , the award-winning Lady Norwood Rose Garden containing over 3000 roses, the Begonia House full of lush temperate and tropical plants, a gift shop and a cafe. There is a good panoramic view over Wellington from the viewing lookout next to the upper cable car terminus. The cable car entrance also has access to the Carter Observatory and the Wellington Cable Car Museum.
