The Catholic Church St Mary of the Angels stands in the center of Wellington, and is the parish church for Wellington Central. This is a Category I listed and protected historic building, built in 1922. It was the first Gothic church to use ferro-concrete in the build and has a brick and timber roof. The first church was built on this site in 1843 to serve new settlers coming from England. Plans were drawn up in 1873 for a larger building to accommodate the growing congregation, and by 1992 the current church form was built.
In keeping with church traditions, the stained glass windows depict scenes from the Bible. The one above the high altar depicts the Crucifixion, those down the left side of the church show the miracles of Jesus, while those down the right depict some of the parables of Jesus. These depict important events in the life of Jesus - His Birth, the Flight into Egypt, Nazareth and the Finding in the
Many of the windows come from the F X Zettler stained glass factory in Munich, Germany. Zettler's name can be seen etched on some of the glass at eye level. Traditionally, stained glass windows were designed to tell parts of the gospel stories for the illiterate. Nowadays, they also serve to illustrate aspects of the Gospel stories for those with little understanding of the Bible.
The church is open to the public.
