The Staatsoper first opened in May 1869 with a performance of Don Giovanni by Motzart, immediately stating it's importance to Viennese society. Since then it has continued as one the principle opera companies in the world. Unfortunately the main auditorium was hit by a bomb in 1945 and much of the original decoration was lost when it was rebuilt.
