Pilgrim's Hall is in the complex of Winchester Cathedral in Winchester. The hall dates from around 1308 and is all that remains of the earlier medieval buildings. It was once the priory guest house. Pilgrim's Hall is of great historical importance as it has the earliest example in the world of a hammer beam roof, though the door and windows of the building are modern.
A hammer beam roof is a Gothic open timber roof. The ordinary tie beam is cut through, and the portions remaining, known as hammerbeams, are supported by curved braces from the wall. One of the finest examples of this method is in Westminster Hall in London
