Te Aro Park - FURTHER INFORMATION
Te Aro Park - Wellington visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Te Aro Park' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Wellington Region.
Te Aro Park is in the heart of the Te Aro disctrict of Wellington. In former times the park was the site of a major Maori pā (fort) called Te Aro. Today the pā has been built over, but the park reflects the Maori past. It was designed by Shona Rapira Davies, a ceramics artist, and is shaped like a canoe, with a bow to the east, where a prow is mounted vertically in the future. The park contains numerous different ceramic patterns, which reflect the light in the water running over some of them. It is very close to Cuba Street, on the northern end of Cuba Mall.
The Te Aro district covers most of the flat area around the harbour between Central Wellington to the north and Mt Victoria to the east. Within it is the Te Papa Museum and the majority of the city's entertainment district. A short walk north from here are the Town Hall and City Gallery Wellington on Civic Square.
