Lyall Bay Beach - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
A panorama looking out over Lyall Bay from the middle of the beach at low tide. This is a very long, sandy beach facing south. The image was taken on a stormy afternoon with rainclouds approaching Wellington over Cooks Straight. A short while later the airport vanished in the rain. Lyall Beach is quite unusual in that it is right next to Wellington International Airport.

Lyall Bay is on the south side of the Rongotai isthmus in Wellington. Though being a long, sandy beach, it is not the most popular swimming beach in Wellington as it is very exposed to cold southerly winds and also right next to Wellington International Airport. However, on a sunny day, local residents are often to be found here. The beach is popular with srufers, wind surfers, kite surfers and beach kites, who launch from and use the far west end of the beach. At high tide the beach is very narrow.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Lyall Parade runs along the back of the beach. It is linked to Evans Bay by Onepu Road and Evans Road.
