The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in Melbourne occupies 2 Treasury Place, overlooking Tereasury Gardens. This magnificent Victorian example of Renaissance-revival architecture was built in 1875-86 and is an important historic building within the city. The building has undergone substantial changes, a third floor was added to the east and west wings in 1933, and further extensions added to the north end of the east wing in 1949. It underwent a significant restoration and refurbishment programme berfore the Department of Education occupied it, being granted a new slate roof, reconstruction of the west wing's north facade, repairs to the cement render, repainting, removal of unsympathetic additions, reconstruction of the main entry stair hall and other key internal elements. This work was rewarded with the Lachlan Macquarie Award for Conservation.
Today visitors wonder past the building on their way to other nearby attractions, which include Fitzroy Gardens a little to the east, or Parliament House, the City Museum and St Patrick's Cathedral a little to the north.
