Marmolada Westgrat - FURTHER INFORMATION
Marmolada Westgrat - Dolomites visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Marmolada Westgrat' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dolomites.
Marmolada mountain - the highest mountain in the Italian Dolomites is seen here near the Punta Penia summit at 10967 ft / 3343 m. One of several summits in this group of peaks on mount Marmolata, all collectively are still higher than any other in the range. Peaking on the horizon in the Pala group are Latemar, Rosengarten, Sassolungo, Sella and Ampezzo Dolomites.
Marmolada's twin summit peaks are Punta Penia and Punta Rocca. Antelao, next highest peak, reaches 3262m. Many visitors overlook Marmolada's peak and instead travel to explore her vast, gleaming white glacier beneath upon which you can ski and go ice-climbing.
The Dolomites are named after the type of limestone from which they are formed, the Dolomite. Here at Marmolada, geologist can explore the volcanic lava ridges of the Padon Chain and the Colac / Buffaure sub-group. The spectacular contrasts between the dark black volcanic rock and the near white dolomite limestone formations set amongst snowy corries and icy glacier make a striking sight.
Around Marmolata there are numerous challenging hiking trails, many of which date back to the second World War when they were used as escape routes through the mountains or for covert travel in dangerous conditions. As one of the most popular destinations, the hiking routes are now very well mapped and much guide information is available.
