Primates Square (Primacialne namestie) is in the middle of the Old Town of Bratislava. It is named after the Primates Palace (Primaciálny palác) which stands on the southern side of the square. A Tourist Information Visitors Centre is also found on Primates Square. A narrow passage leads off from the northwest corner and down the side of the Jesuit Church to Hlavne nam and the Town Hall.
The Primates Palace is the most prominent building in the square. It is a neo-Classical palace built for Archbishop József Batthyány between 1778-1781, and has a dramatic courtyard entrance with a statue in the middle. The most famous building in the palace is the Hall of Mirrors, where the fourth Peace of Pressburg was signed by Johann I Josef, Prince of Liechtenstein, Ignácz Gyulay and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand in 1805, ending the War of the Third Coalition. The palace became the property of the city in 1903, and restoration work at that time uncovered six previously unknown tapestries depicting the legend of Hero and Leander and their tragic love. These date from 1630's and had been made in Mortlake, near London.
