The Primates Palace (Primaciálny palác) is on the southern side of Primates Square (Primacialne namestie) is in the middle of the Old Town of Bratislava. The neo-Classical building has a lovely courtyard with a statue of St George and the Dragon in the middle as shown in this picture.

The Primates Palace was built for Archbishop József Batthyány between 1778-1781. The palace is open to the public and has become a major tourist attraction in the city. Within the palace is the famous Hall of Mirrors, where the fourth Peace of Pressburg treaty was signed by Johann I Josef, Prince of Liechtenstein, Ignácz Gyulay and Charles Maurice de Talleyrand in 1805, ending the War of the Third Coalition after the Battle of Austerlitz where 50,000 Russian, French and Austrian troops were killed.

Also inside the Palace are numerous large portraits of the Hapsburg royalty, including a painting of Marie Therese at her coronation, dated 1742. Many of the rooms are sparsely decorated, though adorned with massive chandeliers. Hanging on the walls are 6 tapestries from the 1630's made in made in Mortlake, near London and uncovered during renovations after the city acquired the Primates Palace in 1903. These tapestries tell the tragedy of fated love between young Greek lovers Hero and Leander, a priestess, who lived on opposite sides of the Hellespont, the stretch of water that runs between the Sea of Mamara and the Aegean Sea. Every night Leander would light a lamp to guide her lover to her as he swan across. One night, in a storm, the light blew out and Hero, unable to see the way to the other side, drowned. Full of grief Leander then killed herself.
