St. Martin's Cathedral (Dom svateho Martina) stands on the western edge of the Old Town of Bratislava, below Bratislava Castle. The cathedral is also known in Slovak as 'Katedrála sv. Martina', 'Dóm sv. Martina', and, formerly 'Konkatedrála sv. Martina'. The cathedral has 3 naves, and is about 70m long and 23m wide with ceilings reaching about 16m and a 85m high tower on the western end. The altars in the side chapels have lavishly decorated rederos.
The first church was built on this site in 1221, but was soon outgrown by the growing city. Construction of a new Gothic cathedral started in 1311, though not finished until 1452 due to lack of finance and intervention of war. Further additions and changes took place in the following centuries. Inside, the cathedral contains Gothic chapels of Czech Queen Sofia and of Saint Anne. In the first part of the 17C the Baroque Chapel of St. John the Merciful was added, soon followed by the famous equestrian sculpture of St. Martin by Georg Rafael Donner, added in 1744. Final alterations and repairs between 869 to 1877 to damage caused by fire, earthquake and war resulted in the current Gothic cathedral seen today.
