Trinitarian Church - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

This panorama shows the outside of the Trinitarian Church in Bratislava. Sadly the church was not open at the time I was there so it was not possible to take a picture of the inside. As shown in the image, the street is also lined with shops and cafes on one side.

Trinitarian Church - FURTHER INFORMATION

Trinitarian Church - Bratislava visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Trinitarian Church' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Bratislava kraj.

The Trinitarian Church (Kostol Trinitarov) is on Župné námestie in the Old Town of Bratislava, very close to Michael's Gate and the Capuchin Church. The full name of the church is 'Church of Saint John of Matha and Saint Felix of Valois', and it is also known as 'Trinity Church' and, incorrectly, as Holy Trinity Church.

In 1529 the older St Michaels church which stood on the site was demolished along with surrounding buildings to allow the defenders of Bratislava to see the attacking Turks during the Ottoman wars. In 1717 the Trinitarian Order started building a new church on the site, consecrated in 1727. The design of the church is thought to be based on St Peter's Church (Peterskirche) in Vienna. Inside the church is an altarpiece showing St. John of Matha and St. Felix of Valois ransoming prisoners from Turkish capture, highlighting one of the founding intentions of the church - to ransom back prisoners of war during the Crusades.

To the left of the church there used to be an associated monastery. However, the Trinitarian Order was closed in 1782, and the monastery became the comitatus (county) office. Much of the building was subsequently destroyed and rebuilt in 1844, becoming the the seat of the Pressburg county with a Great Hall used for concerts. The Seat moved to Bratislava Castle in the 20C.
