This image shows Karangahape Road in Auckland. The picture was taken in the daytime, and the street looks like nothing special. However, everything changes in the evening when the clubs open and the place fills with people from dusk till dawn.

Karangahape Road, often referred to simply as 'K' Road, runs just north of the CBD of Auckland. It is the most well known road in the city for club goers and those looking for a pulsating night life. K Road began life in 1841 when the land was brought from local chiefs for a varied assortment of goods including 20 trousers, 4 casks of tobacco, 50 blankets, 20 hatchets and a bag of flour among other things. The site of the current Sheraton Hotel was once Partingtons Windmill, built here in 1850. Various department stores opened along the road, moving away in the 1920's into the more affluent suburbs.
The fortunes of Karangahape Road began to turn around when a couple of night clubs opened up in the area in the 1990's. Today the road is lined with numerous clubs, bars, cafes and the like, and has become the center of night life and clubbing in Auckland. Alongside this, K Road has also become associated with the Red Light Area of Auckland, with a fairly large sex industry plying trade both along the streets and from various shops.
