Stephansdom High Altar

Stephansdom High Altar

The High Altar in Stephansdom took seven years to build between 1641 to 1647 when parts of Stephansdom were refurbished in the Baroque style fashionable in this period.

The building of the new Stephansdom High Altar was done on the instruction of Bishop Philipp Friedrich Graf Breuner, the bishop of Vienna. He employed Tobias Pock who painted the "The Stoning of St. Stephen" above the altar. This work in Stpehansdom is the earliest known painting that Tobias did.

The altar itself was made of marble from Poland, Tyrol and Styria. The altar piece is surrounded by representations of Saints Leopold, Florian, Sebastian and Rochus, patron saints of nearby areas. Above the altarpiece is a statue of Mary.

The other panoramic images taken from inside Stephansdom show some further detail of the Nave and Choir Stalls, the Wiener Neustädter Altar, and the Pulpit.
