Lake Urrunaga-Villarreal lies north of Vitoria-Gastiez in Alava, the capital city of Basque Country. An artificial lake, or reservoir, was built to ensure a sustainable water supply to the surrounding area. It also supplies the rapidly expanding city of Vitoria-Gastiez which, since becoming the capital city of the recently autonomous Basque Country, has been undergoing substantial rejuvenation works to the city center and construction work extending the residential areas in line with the increasing population.
The reservoir has transformed this area into a very pleasant and scenic recreational location to visit. It's possible to enjoy fishing and watersports but it is also a relaxing retreat in a peaceful setting, still conveniently accessible from the nearby city.
Around the reservoir, the tree-lined shore meanders around the contours of the land, creating many coves, small islands and small bays. It makes a fantastic day out to hire a small sail-boat and explore all these hidden away areas where you can relax, find a secluded area and enjoy a picnic, swim and get away from it all.
