Covering 21 hectares and filled with horticultural delights, the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are an oasis in the heart of Christchurch. The gardens contain flora from throughout New Zealand and around the world. Started in 1863 with the planting of an English Oak, the gardens have developed into the finest plant collections in New Zealand and part of the reason why Christchurch is known as the Garden City.
The Christchurch Botanic Gardens lie on a loop of the Avon River, next to Hagley Park and contains numerous specialized collections and houses. Among the highlights of the gardens are:
- The Herb Garden - started in 1986
- Central Rose Garden with over than 250 varieties of roses.
- Cunningham House Conservatory - with many tropical plants
- Garrick House - cacti and other desert plants.
- Gilpin House - insectivorous plants and orchids
- Townend House - collections of Calceolaria, Cyclamen, Gloxinia, and Primula
- Peackock Fountain near the Gardens main entrance.
- The Rock Garden - some plants here flower throughout the year.
- The Heather Garden has several Ericas and Callunas.
- The Water Garden has several trees and shrubs.
- Walks along the Avon River
