Central Rose Gardens - FURTHER INFORMATION

The Central Rose Gardens are at the heart of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens in Christchurch. The circular gardens are in front of the Cuningham House Conservatory in a sheltered and sunny location ideal for growing roses and surrounded by a protective yew hedge.
Within the Central Rose Gardens are over 200 different varieties of roses, planted carefully with the larger plants and deeper reds towards the outer rim of the circle. In the middle is a sun dial, visible in this picture, which was placed here in 1954 in memory of Mr Thomas Stevenson. The original rose garden was laid out in rectangular form in 1909, and the re-landscaped to the current design in 1935. It currently displays cultivars and hybrids of modern garden roses including bush, climbing, standard and miniature roses. The Pergola archways over the Rose Garden entrances were added in 1995.
