Bendigo is a center for banking and manufacturing. It is noted that the population of the area in in decline in the outlying rural areas whereas Bendigo is rapidly expanding into a metropolitan city. It's famously French-style late Victorian architecture gives the city a Parisian ambiance, which together with its thriving economy makes it an attractive place to live.

The Sacred Heart Cathedral is an elegant and resoundingly beautiful Gothic style Cathedral with simple clean, white freestone stonework interiors forming tall, slim archways and windows and beautifully lit to give a tranquil and understated, peaceful feel. The Town Hall, Post Office and the Court House buildings are further examples of the intricate architectural facades of this period. In the Charing Cross area, the architecture takes on a different feel with an eclectically jumbled-together appearance from several different post-war styles of building all side by side. The Golden Dragon Museum focuses on the Gold Rush and on the impact of the Chinese settlers who helped forge the culture and community in the early days of the Gold Rush.
