Akaroa War Memorial - FURTHER INFORMATION
Akaroa War Memorial - Banks Peninsula visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Akaroa War Memorial' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Canterbury.
The war memorial at Akaroa has names dating back to the Boer War. The stone structure with a Gothic spire stands in the middle of a walled garden with stone seating on the edge of Beach Road. It is a monument to the loss to the Banks Peninsula, Canterbury and wider New Zealand suffered during past conflicts. Situated right by the sea, next to the high street, it is a dramatic change from shopping to remembering, and a good place to step aside from the hectic pace of Akaroa during the tourist high season.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Akaroa is about 80km from the middle of Christchurch. The H75 runs from Christchurch along the Banks Peninsula to Akaroa. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The War Memorial is on the northern edge of a cove, at the beginning of Beach Road.
