Summit Road is a scenic route across the tops of the hills of the Banks Peninsula and a popular tourist drive. Small roads lead down the hills and valleys of this extinct volcano the the various bays and coves that line the coastline.
This panorama shows one such view from a field overlooking Akaroa Harbour, a deep inlet on the southern side of Banks Peninsula, near to where Pigeon Bay Road heads south from Summit Road and begins to descend to the cdoast. At the bottom of the hill a spur of land projects into the bay. To the right of this is Barrys Bay. To the left is Duvauchelle, and further round the coast is the very popular town of Akaroa.
Heading north, Pigeon Bay Road crosses Summit Road and then descends again to Pigeon Bay, a remote little settlement at the end of a similarly deep inlet on the northern side of the Banks Peninsula.
