Temple of 10000 Buddhas Monastery - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

A panorama taken outside the main temple building at the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas in the New Territories, Hong Kong. There are thousands of different Buddha statues here, all in different postures. Almost none of them conform to the traditional sitting Buddha form most people associate with him, these are all over the place, some with massive long mustaches or arms, wielding weapons, multiple heads etc. It is an 'anything goes' collection of figures.

The Temple of 10,000 Buddhas (Maan Faat Ji) is a tourist attraction and site of pilgrimage in Hong Kong. It is referred to as either the Temple of Monastery of 10,000 Buddhas, depending on which piece of literature you are reading. Set high in the hills above Sha Tin in the New Territories of Hong Kong, a visit to the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas will take about half a day.

The temple was founded in 1949 by a monk called Yuet Kai, and took over 8 years to complete. The temple is reached by either a steep 400+ step path. The path is lined with hundreds of individual, unique, Buddha statues reflecting representations from all over the world. Once at the top, visitors enter the forecourt of the temple itself, lined with yet more Buddha statues in bizarre poses, some with multiple heads or limbs, shown in this panorama.

At the northern end of the complex is the main temple which contains around 13,000 miniature Buddha figurines which line the temple walls. The compound also contains a 9 storey pagoda at the southern end, which visitors can ascend via an internal staircase. A path leads further up the hill from the temple to more modern buildings and a new burial chamber for ashes.
