Garden by Christchurch Priory - FURTHER INFORMATION
Garden by Christchurch Priory - Christchurch visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Garden by Christchurch Priory' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dorset.
This walled garden is a short walk from the Christchurch Priory in Chirstchurch. In the middle of the gardens is a stone column which commemorates the 900th anniversary of the building of the Priory church, celebrated in 2004. Each side of the column has relief sculptures representing different aspects of the history. These are:
- Monk feeding a bird - monks studied at the priory for hundreds of years
- Couple getting married in the church by Bishop Ranaulf Flambard, who planned the building of the priory in 1094.
- Norman Soldier helping the Bishop. This marks a significant building phase during the Norman period
- Man supporting the Vicar of Christchurch and kicking a monk. This represents the time of Henry the VIII and the dissolution of the monasteries which almost led to the destruction of this church along with many others in England at that time.
