Shrine of Remembrance - FURTHER INFORMATION

Shrine of Remembrance - Melbourne visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Shrine of Remembrance' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Victoria.

The Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne is the largest ANZAC war memorial in Australia. Initially the Shrine of Remembrance was built to commemorate the fallen from Victoria in WWI, but soon became the prime memorial for all of Australia's war dead. Today the memorial is used for the annual ANZAC Day (25 April) and Remembrance Day (11 November) ceremonies.

The focal point of the Shrine of Remembrance is the Sanctuary which contains the Stone of Remembrance, set in the floor so that people have to bend over to read the inscription on it. Below this, in the basement of the Shrine of Remembrance, is the Crypt with a statue of a farther and son.

Plans to build a memorial were proposed at the end of WWI, but building did not begin until 1927. Building was slowed by the Great Depression, and the Shrine of Remembrance was completed in 1934. The WWII Forecourt was added after WWII on the northern side of the shrine, and contains an Eternal Flame and the 12.5 m high WWII Memorial cenotaph. The WWII Forecourt can be seen in this panorama.

In 2002 plans were undertaken to build a visitor centre underneath the Shrine of Remembrance, which today gives visitors a greater insight to the function of the shrine and some history of the conflicts. The main focal points for visitors include the main Shrine room and the Crypt. There is also a platform high up on the shrine's structure, accessed through the main Shrine, which gives commanding views over the surrounding area.
