Christchurch Priory Quire & Misericords - FURTHER INFORMATION
Christchurch Priory Quire & Misericords - Christchurch visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Christchurch Priory Quire & Misericords' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dorset.
Christchurch Priory in Christchurch began in 1094. The Great Quire shown in this panorama was rebuilt in the 15C. The amazing carved stone Jesse Reredos date from the 14C and depict the lineage of Jesus from Jesse through King David and King Solomon and on to Joseph. Above the rederos is a mural from 1967 which depicts the ascension of Jesus. It is not visible in this picture.
Also shown here are the Misericords, wooden seats designed to stop the monks from falling asleep during the services. The name for these seats comes from the Latin 'misericordia', meaning Pity or Compassion. A monk who did fall asleep would be tipped forward with a loud noise. Unique carvings are found beneath each seat. The oldest of these date back to 1210, one of the oldest in England, showing three foliates of acanthus. Tow other carvings have been dated to 1220 (two dragons entwined in foliage) and 1450 (Winged Lion of St Mark and the Angel and Scroll of St Matthew). Many visitors are rightly awed when they realize the age of the wood here. The other mesericords are from a later period.
