Salgadeiras are little lakes formed on shallow depressions. There are many in this location. The fauna here is very beautiful.

Salgadeiras lakes in Serra da Estrela National Park at the heart of Portugal's Beira region near Guarda.
The Serra da Estrela National Park is a nature conservation area extending to approx 1000 square Km. Part of the park is the mountain range which includes Torre mountain, the highest in mainland Portugal. Once an ice-field during the Quaternary geological period, this landscape left ravaged by glaciation has distinctive rock formations such as horseshoe-shaped valleys, corries, ravines and polished rock fascia - testimony to the power of ice and snow to shape a landscape. In the pocket-like indents in the rock, small lakes are formed called Salgadeiras. These reserves of water allow wildlife and insects such as lizards, midwife frogs and otters, badgers and water moles to thrive in a protected environment. Alpine-like plants including the endangered Gentian grow around the edges of these marshy areas and create a quite beautiful scene in summertime.
