The PUC building on Van Ness Avenue is surrounded by elegant architecture which houses governmental offices and municipal institutions. The Opera House and the Symphony Hall are nearby, as are the War Memorial Veterans Building and the Asian Art Museum across Civic Park.

The CPUC website explains its role thus: 'The PUC regulates privately owned telecommunications, electric, natural gas, water, railroad, rail transit, and passenger transportation companies, in addition to authorizing video franchises.'
