USS Pampanito Stern - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama shows the view of San Francisco Bay and Pier 45 from the stern of the USS Pampanito submarine. The SS Jeremiah O'Brien, another historic warship, is moored just off the stern of the submarine, as seen in this panorama. Alcatraz island lies in front of Angel Island in the bay. You really get a feel for how narrow a submarine is from here.

Fisherman's Wharf is home to the USS Pampanito, a Balao-class submarine which saw active service with the Pacific fleet towards the close of the second world war. A National Landmark and managed by the National Historic Maritime Park, she had a clean-sweep with six tours of duty and sank over 27,000 tonnes of enemy shipping. Her unusual name is derived from Pampano, a type of fish (gafftopsail pompano, or trachinotus rhodopus).
