The Democracy Monument is one of the focal points in Bangkok. Built after 1939 between the royal palaces (the Grand Palace at Ratanakosin and the Chitrlada Palace in Dusit), it commemorates the transfer of power to the constitutional monarchy.
The Democracy Monument is 24m wide and 24m high, and contains a copy of the constitution and is surrounded by 75 cannons. Each wing contains friezes of heroes of Thailand. It forms a traffic island on Thanon Ratchadamoen, one of the main roads in Bangkok.
From here Thanon Ratchadamoen continues east to bridge over Khlong Banglamphu close to the Phra Mahakan Fortress and the Golden Mount. This short walk also brings you to the Queen's Gallery, King Prajadhipok Museum, Wat Saket, Wat Rajnadda, and Loh Prasat.
