Tehran - FURTHER INFORMATION

Tehran - Tehran visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Tehran' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Tehran Province.

Tehran is the capital city of Iran and of Tehran Province. This city is also the center of industry and commerce for the country with around 17,000 industries based here including manufacturing, electronics, textiles, carpets, and chemicals - including industry used to support the production and refinement of oil from the Persian Gulf. There is a major oil refinery near the city. Tehran is a green city, well spread out with parkland and trees amongst it's streets. It's a cosmopolitan city, the 11 million residents have a mix of ethnicity, religion and cultures amongst its native and migrant population.

Archaeological evidence suggests the Tehran existed as a settlement as far back as 6000BC, so at 8000 years old, one of the oldest known settlements on Earth. Thus, Tehran has an extraordinary significance in culture, history, through the empires of mid-asia and eastern europe, in literature, religion and archaeology - no surprise that this fine city is graced with more sites of cultural significance, fine buildings and antiquities than most other cities.

The skyline of modern Tehran is dominated by the impressive Borj-e Milad or Milad Tower, one of the most recogniseable landmarks in the continent (seen here from Goft-a-Goo Park). Standing 1427ft tall, this is currently the fourth tallest tower in the world and twelfth tallest free-standing building. It also hosts an international trade and convention center and communications center. The white marble Azadi Tower, built in 1971, also know as the Freedom Tower or Shahyād Āryāmehr, marks the gateway to the city and was built in commemoration of the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire. There are also many fine examples of post-modern architecture which give a contemporary and eclectic feel to this ancient and enigmatic city.
