Founded in 1871, now one of America's oldest schools of higher education in art, the Art Institute has an illustrious role of alumni to its credit. Whilst a working academic campus, the building is also a visitor attraction hosting exhibits of art from the work of its students and visiting artists. There are several galleries with permanent and occasional exhibits, but amongst those on continual display is a mural by Diego Rivera. Faculties include fine arts, photography, film-making, new genres of digital media, sculpture and painting - all working to support the core mission to encourage creativity, critical thinking and innovation in art.
