The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption is locally known as St Mary's Cathedral. It is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco and the mother church of the Catholic faith in the surrounding counties. It is also the metropolitan cathedral for the Ecclesiastical province of San Francisco.

The current building is the third to bear the name and was opened in 1971. The original was built in 1854 and is now known as Old St. Mary's Cathedral. This modern and architecturally innovative Cathedral includes an events center which can accommodate up to 1000 people. There is a gift shop and guided tours of the building. It was designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and Pietro Belluschi in the 'Structural Expressionist Modern' architectural style. The Cathedral is open to all and warmly welcomes visitors.
