The Lak Muang, or City Pillar, in Bangkok is a pillar that is said to provide a home for the spirits of the city. Most cities in Thailand have their own lak muang shrine. The Lak Munag of Bangkok is the home of the gods Phra Seua Muang, Phra Song Muang and Phra Lak Muang.
In 1782 King Rama I moved the capital city of Thailand from Thonburi to Bangkok. The auspicious time for the founding of this new capital was set at 6.45am on April 21, and at this time the lak muang was driven into the ground opposite the northeast corner of the Grand Palace. The lak muang contains the horoscope of Bangkok.
The shrine and gardens were renovated in 1982 to mark the bicentenary of the founding of Bangkok. The gardens are immaculate and contain a number of other shrines. Some people pay dancers to dance for them, thought to bring good fortune, so this can be a good place to see some classical dance.
