Battery Park City forms part of the West Side of Manhattan in New York. The residential and business area is built on 92 acres of land reclaimed from the Hudson River excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center and other buildings. It lies just north of Battery Park after which it is named. It is boundaried by West Street which separates it from the Financial District and TriBeCa area of Manhattan. In the early 20th century the area was known as the Greek District.
The attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 had a major impact on Battery Park City. Many residents had to leave for a period in the aftermath and a duct cloud hung over the area for weeks. It took a long time to recover, but is now once again a thriving area full of life. The Esplanade, a promenade running along the bank of the Hudson, links many of the parts of Battery Park City, forming a great pedestrian artery in the area with good views over to Downtown Jersey City on the other side.
