Wat Benjamabophit is often called the Marble Temple. The main compound is made of white marble, making it unique among the temples in Bangkok. In addition to this the grounds of Wat Benjamabophit are much more spacious than most and has a small canal running through it. There are not many temples in Bangkok that have this, though Wat Bowon Niwet is another.
The canal in the grounds separates the temple from the monk's living quaters, or 'gutis'. Turtles live in this canal, in order to get a wish granted Thais set free animals, like birds, or turtles. Caged animals are often sold for this purpose just outside many shrines and temples.
Wat Benjamabophit is the newest temple to be built in Bangkok. Inside the ubosot of Wat Benjamabophit is a bronze copy of the Phra Buddha Chinnarat image found in the city of Phitsanulok in Northern Thailand. It is worth taking time to relax and stroll around the grounds of Wat Benjamabophit before heading off for the ubosot and the cloisters where there are over 50 bronze Buddha images .
Wat Benjamabophit is on Thanon Sri Ayutthaya, close to the Statue of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), Chitrlada Palace, Dusit Zoo and the Royal Turf Club.
