Neila de San Miguel - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Neila San Miguel, with a population of just 100 habitants, is located on the north side of the Sierra de Bejar (2500 metres above sea level) in Avila province. Neila is a village representative of the north face of the central system and typical of the Castilian plateau. Dedicated to agriculture and livestock, the beauty of its landscape and views, coupled with the beautiful enclave of the mountains, survives the passage of time with the hospitality of its people and the beauty of its ancient past. The original tower Neila St. Miguel dates from the early Middle Ages and was built over two huge granite stones.

Neila de San Miguel is a small rural village located right on the western border of Avila province. It lies at an altitude of 1163 meters and is around 100Km from the capital city. The village celebrates its annual festival on September 29-30.

Surrounding the village are extensive forests which in Autumn turn into a spectacular sight transforming the landscape into a wash of bright colours of gold, red, green and amber coloured leaves.

A distinctive landmark in the village is the 'tower'. Built on large granite boulders, it is the size of a small garden shed and has a long staircase built up to the entrance point. The entrance is the size of a regular house door and vestibule, but viewed from the side it makes an unusual sight because the building behind this doorway is barely one meter in length, thus giving the appearance of a 'stairway to nowhere'. Built beside the village church, this ancient landmark is evidently well cared for.

Population statistics for Neila de San Miguel show that throughout the earlier 20th century, the village typically enjoyed a larger population of around 500 citizens. In the 1970s, this figure fell to around half and by the 1980s, the village had around 100 citizens, as at present.
