Wat Bowonniwet (Thai: วัดบวรนิเวศวิหาร) may also be known as Wat Bowon Niwet and Wat Bowoniwes or Wat Bowon. It is located on Thanon Phra Sumen, just a short walk away from Phra Sumen Fortress.
This monastery as a long association with the Thai Monarchy, and male members of the royal family often spend some time here as monks. Wat Bowonniwet is a centre for the Thammayut Nikaya school of Thai Theravada Buddhism, a minority Buddhist sect in Thailand.
Because of this the grounds are fairly large. The compound is unusual in that there is a canal running through it. People earn merit be releasing turtles into the canal, which the monastery must then care for. This can also be found at Wat Benjamabophit (The Marble Temple) in Dusit, which also has a canal.
The ubosot of Wat Bowonniwet contains the Phra Phutthachinasri (พระพุทธชินสีห์) image of Buddha, which dates from around 1357.
