Watarrka National Park is an area of desert bushland in the Northern Territory of Australia lies south west of Alice Springs and about half way along the route to the famous Uluru and Kata Tjuta (Ayers Rock and Mount Olga) rock escarpment landmarks.
The National Park is famous for Kings Canyon, a landmark at the western end of the George Gill Range. Carved out of the red sandstone by the Kings Creek, this canyon has steep walls over 300 meters high. This site is sacred to the indigenous Aboriginal peoples. Two walking routes are laid out, one with a severely steep climb up a slope known as 'heart-attack hill'. It leads to a panoramic viewpoint which is well worth the effort of the climb. A little further on, the walk leads past a desert oasis known as the 'Garden of Eden', a popular resting place on the 7Km route.The nearest accommodation is about 6Km away.
