Captain Cook was the first European to chart the eastern coastline of Australia in 1770. The statue of him in Hyde Park in Sydney stands at the southern end of the park, near to the ANZAC War Memorial, and on the corner of Southern Street and Park Street. It is just across the road from the Australian Museum. Sydney's Hyde Park is named after Hyde Park in London.
