The Hornby Lighthouse is the third oldest lighthouse in Australia. It stands 9m tall on South Head guiding shipping into Sydney Harbour. This read and white stripped lighthouse stands on top of a 16m high cliff, and was first lit in 1858. The Hornby Light was automated in 1933. The oldest lighthouse in Australia is the Macquarie Lighthouse, which stands on Dunbar Head a few km to the south.
South Head has been an important defensive position for Sydney, and the remains of several gun installations can still be found. One of the old cannons is in overlooking Camp Cove near to HMAS Watson. From South Head the coastline runs due south to Bondi Beach. Due north of South Head, near to Manly and enclosing Sydney Harbour from the north is North Head.
