South Beach at Studland - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken from South Beach at Studland. This picture was taken late in the afternoon, and the sun is sinking low behind the cliffs. Studland Beach has shrunk in recent years due to erosion, and lately the bay has suffered an invasion of seaweed. This picture shows part of the beach, lined with beach huts, and the numerous yachts and boats at anchor in the bay.

South Beach is the nearest beach to Old Harry Rocks in Studland. This ends a long sweep of sandy beaches that starts at Shell Bay Beach at the landing site for the Sandbanks Chain Ferry. South Beach is north facing, and backed by steep hills so is often in shadow in the afternoon. It is a favorite with boating people who anchor here and then come ashore to visit a nearby pub. There is also a small cafe on the beach front which served hot and cold food.
The bay here is quite shallow, and the waters recede a distance at low tide to reveal a sandy bottom scattered with rocks. It is popular for snorkelling and other water sports. Water skiing and jet skiing in the bay are also popular, especially below the cliffs of Old Harry Rocks.
It is possible to walk up the cliff path along to Old Harry Rocks and then to continue all the way past Swanage and beyond to Kimmeridge, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door and, eventually, Lyme Regis.
