Castel Sant Angelo V stands in the Rione Ponte of Rome. It was originally built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum Hadrian's Mausoleum (hence the alternative name of 'Mausoleum of Hadrian'). It served time as a mausoleum, fort, prison, palace and now a museum. The name changed in the 6th Century by Pope Gregory the Great who was praying for deliverance for Rome from a plague and saw a vision of St. Michael on top of the building. This is commemorated by the bronze statue on top the building overlooking Rome and wielding a sword, as seen in this panoramic.

This vantage point offers a great panoramic view over the surrounding area. The Ponte Sant Angelo crosses the Tiber in front of the fortress linking it to the rest of Rome. The domes of some of the larger churches in Rome peek over the rooftops of the city. These include the Pantheon, S. GiovanniIn Laterano, and S Maria Maggiore Basilica.

To the right of the bridge, on the same side of the river as the Castel Sant Angelo, looms the façade and dome of St. Peter's Basilica beyond St. Peter's Square. The cupola of St. Peter's Basilica at the top of the dome, being about 150m high, is another great place to get a panoramic view over Rome.
