Hawker is a small town in South Australia. It lies near to Port Augusta, some 365km north of Adelaide, and acts as a hub to the Central Flinders Ranges. During the year the town holds a number of event, most popular of which include the Hawker Cup horse race in May and the Hawker Art Festival in September. The town contains a number of hotels / motels as well as self contained apartments, camping sites and caravan parks.
There are a number of popular viewpoints around the town which offer good views of the surrounding area. Among these are Camel Hump Lookout, Castle Hill Lookout and Jarvis Hill Lookout. Nearby within the Flinders Range themselves are Aboriginal sites at Yourambulla Caves and Death Rock, various trails around Elders Range, Magnetic Hill, Arkaba Hills and Wilpena Pound.
Historically, Hawker is named after George Charles Hawker (one-time Speaker of the House in the South Australian parliament), and was established when the Ghan railway arrived in 1880. This railway served Marree and Alice Springs and ran through Hawker until 1956. The old railway station was renovated in 1989, becoming the Old Ghan Restaurant and Gallery.
