Lasseter Highway (Highway 4) runs west from the Erldunda on the Stuart Highway to Uluru National Park, forming the main road access to Peterman, Ayers Rock, Yulara (and Conellan Airport), Kata Tjuta and Uluru. Landmarks on the way include Mt. Ebenezer Roadhouse, Mount Conner and Curtin Springs Cattle Station.
Lasseter Highway is a fairly flat 244km long, fully sealed highway with a top elevation of 521m and a lowest elevation of 415m. At the eastern end Lasseter Highway joins Uluru Road. Highway 4 continues east from Uluru to Mount Olga (Kata Tuja). Some maps refer to this section as Lasseter Highway, while others call it Kata Tuja Road.
Lasseter Highway & Lasseter's Reef - Lasseter Higway is named after Lewis Hubert (Harold Bell) Lasseter, who claimed to have discovered a fabulously rich gold seam west of Kata Tjuta in 1897, but had not been able to accurately chat it at the time. In the 1930's, Lasseter managed to raise money for an expedition to relocate the deposit, then known as 'Lasseter's Reef'. The expedition ended in failure, with Lasseter wondering off alone into the outback and dying there. The story of Lasseter's Reef still remains, but no gold has ever been found.
