Jurassic Coast Path at Kimmeridge - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
A panorama taken from the clifftop overlooking Broadbench, a rocky ledge near to Kimmeridge Bay. The path that runs along the cliff here is part of the Jurassic Coast Path. From here the path ascends Tyneham Cap on the way to Lulworth Cove. The coastal path is renowned for its steep ascents and descents as it meanders the hill of Dorset and Devon. At the end of the clifftop here is a solitary CCTV camera, possibly watching for misbehaving cows.

The whole of the south coast of England from in Dorset to Exmouth in Devon is accessible to walkers and hikers. This area is well known for fossils and is called the Jurassic Coast. It has been designated as a World Heritage Site and is very popular in the summer. The coastal path is about 95 miles long and the rocks date from the Jurassic Period, some 185 million years ago.
Along the Jurassic Coast are numerous famous geological features, many of which appear in Geography and Geology text books around the world. The scenery along the coast is stunning, with steep hills ascending from the shoreline before plunging back down again to picturesque bays. Along the way the Jurassic Coast Path passes through or near small rural villages and a few seaside resort towns like Swanage and Weymouth. These towns provide hotels and hostels for those visiting, however Bed & Breakfast (B&B) places, Farmstay holidays and holiday cottages are scattered throughout the countryside.
At the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast is the entrance to Poole Harbour, Shell Bay Beach, and Studland on the Isle of Purbeck. The cliff walk starts near here at Old Harry Rocks and continues along the cliffs before descending to Swanage, a seaside resort town. Climbing once more the path passes by Durlston Castle and then along well known formations like Dancing Ledges and Chapman's Pool before reaching Kimmeridge Ledges and Kimmeridge Bay. Much of the land here is owned and managed by the Ministry of Defense and may be closed at times when the military use the nearby shooting ranges. Possession by the MoD has helped to prevent development of the area and preserve much of the natural beauty.
From here the path ascends Tyneham Cap and continues west past Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door to Weymouth and Portland Bill. Beyond here the path continues along the coast all the way to Exmouth in Devon, passing through West Bexton, West Bay and up before descending again to Charmouth cliffs and on to Lyme Regis. From here the Jurassic Coast Path enters the county of Devon and pases through Beer and Seaton before arriving at Exmouth.
