The Pen Ponds are the largest ponds in Richmond Park in London. They are divided into the Upper and Lower Pen Ponds, and are set at two different levels divided by a track and embankment. These used to be gravel pits, but took their present form at the end of the 1600's. Water is pumped from the ponds to feed the Main Stream in the Isabella Plantation within the park. They are home to many birds and aquatic life, and fishing by permit is allowed at specific points around the ponds. During WWII the Pen Ponds were drained to prevent them being used as a landmark by the Luftwaffe.
