Putney Embankment Rowing - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken from one of the boat launch slipways along the Putney Embankment. There are several boating and rowing clubs here and it is not at all uncommon to see rowers carrying their boats up the ramp, as shown in this picture, taken at low tide, late one afternoon in October 2008.

Putney has a long history and association with water sports, particularly rowing on the River Thames. Also along the Putney Embankment are several bars and caffes, ideally set up to rehydrate and quench thirst after a hard session rowing on the river. The River Thames is tidal at this point, and at very high tides the embankment can become flooded for short periods of time.
The Putney Embankment also marks the beginning of a foot and cycle path along the River Thames that starts at Putney Bridge and then continues past Hammersmith Bridge all the way to Kew Gardens and beyond Richmond to Kingston upon Thames. On the opposite side of the Thames is Bishop's Park and Fullham Palace, both popular places of rest and recreation.
