Hammersmith Bridge spans the River Thames in London linking Hammersmith in the north to Barnes, and an important transport link. This suspension bridge has become a well known landmark in London, and a bit of a tourist attraction. The current bridge is the second on the site, opening in 1887, and replacing the earlier bridge (built in 1824) which was no longer able to cope with the increased traffic and loads.
Hammersmith Bridge has been unsuccessfully attacked by the Real IRA and the Provisional IRA who both tried to blow it up on three occasions. The last attack, in 2000, resulted in Hammersmith Bridge being closed to traffic for 2 years. On the southern side of the bridge is a cycle and walking path that starts at the Putney Embankment and continues along the Thames past Kew Gardens, Richmond and on to Kingston upon Thames.
