Birdsville Track is a 517km long outback track running running north from the Oodnadatta Track at the small town of Marree in South Australia to the tiny settlement of Birdsville in Queensland. On the way the track across the Strzelecki Desert, Tirari Desert and Sturt's Stony Desert.
Birdsville Track has been upgraded to a proper dirt road and has become increasingly popular with tourists. Anyone wishing to travel the length must ensure that they carry sufficient supplies, water and fuel, as the area is vary barren. There is a single refuelling stop at Mungerannie Hotel (Mungerannie Station) about half way along the Birdsville Track.
Lining much of the Birdsville Track is a Dog Fence, a 1.8m tall fence initially built to be a barrier to rabbits, but now maintained to keep out dingos and wild dogs, protecting sheep. It is one of the longest man-made structures on earth.
