The Octagon - FURTHER INFORMATION
Dunedin virtual tour with a 360° panorama of 'The Octagon' linked to a Google map. A Dunedin attractions travel guide.
The Octagon of Dunedin is, as the name suggests, an eight sided square. It is the city square and contains a statue to Robert Burns, a poet and uncle of one of Dunedin's city founders. The Octagon was refurbished in the 1980's retaining many of the Edwardian features, including the walkways and street lighting providing an old feel to the square, complimenting the surrounding architecture.
On the northern side of the Octagon is the Church of St Paul and the town hall, which contains the Tourist Information Centre (I-Site Visitors Centre). Within the Octagon are 2 walks, one called the Writer's Walk contains quotes from famous writers, while the other contains plaques commemorating Dunedin born Olympic athletes that have won medals. In the southern side of the square is a regular market.
