The First Church of Otago in Dunedin was established in 1848 when Dunedin was established as a Free Church of Scotland establishment. The minister was was Thomas Burns, nephew of the poet Thomas Burns whose statue stands in the Octagon. The church now contains a Heritage and Visitors' Centre set up in the Moray Hall which contains an exhibition of the history of Dunedin and this part of New Zealand.
